Skansen was built in the year 1891 by Arthur Hazelius after his endaevor to preserve the culture, tradition and lifestyle of various rural sites in Stockholm even when they are adapting to industrialization. In order to build Skansen, Hazelius went on various trips to buy some 150 houses when served as the features of his pre-industrialization town.
To complete the scene and make it even more realistic, Skansen has people dressed as if they were craftsmen from the said early years. So visit Stockholm and come to Skansen to see how life actually was in rural Sweden back in the 19th century.
Skansen also has a petting zoo but unlike most zoos, the theme of the place is made to complement that of the pre-industrialization town.
Such that the zoo houses Scandinavian animals such as the bison, moose, reindeer, wolves and wolverines, lynx, otter, grey seal and some farm animals housed in farmsteads.
